Commuters Rejoice: This New Highway Cuts Lucknow to Kanpur Travel Time by More Than Half Starting Next Week

Getting between Lucknow and Kanpur is about to get a whole lot faster. Starting July 13, the highly anticipated Lucknow-Kanpur Expressway will officially open to the public, turning what used to be a frustrating two-hour bumper-to-bumper crawl into a smooth 45-minute drive.

Built by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) for around ₹4,700 crore, this 63-kilometer, six-lane highway has been in the works since 2020. It is designed specifically to take the pressure off the notoriously congested existing national highway, making life easier for daily commuters and freight trucks alike.

High-profile officials, including Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Union Road Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari, and Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, are expected to attend the opening ceremony.

What Makes This New Route Special?

This is not just another stretch of asphalt. The project blends modern engineering with smart tech to ensure a safer, more reliable commute between Uttar Pradesh’s political capital and its main industrial hub.

Here are the key highlights of the new expressway:

  • The Layout: The highway features an 18-kilometer elevated section combined with 45 kilometers of brand-new greenfield alignment.
  • Smart Tech: It is packed with an Intelligent Traffic Management System. This means speed radars, pan-tilt-zoom cameras, emergency call boxes, and automatic incident detection are built right into the road.
  • Future Connections: If you are traveling further out, the route includes an interchange at Unnao that links directly to the upcoming Ganga Expressway, which will majorly boost regional connectivity.
  • Eco-Friendly Touch: The forest department is already planning to plant roughly 46,000 trees along the corridor to keep the route green.

A Big Win for Local Business

Beyond saving you from traffic headaches, the expressway is expected to be a massive economic driver for the region. Diwakar Tripathi, representing Lucknow MP Rajnath Singh, noted that the corridor will give a serious boost to local trade, logistics, and urban development.

Whether you are commuting for work or shipping goods, your drive through Lucknow, Unnao, and Kanpur is about to get a major upgrade. Mark your calendars for July 13 and get ready to skip the traffic.
