Ganga Expressway Extension to Haridwar: UP Cabinet Clears ₹10,761 Crore Project
The Uttar Pradesh cabinet, chaired by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, has approved a ₹10,761 crore project to extend the Ganga Expressway up to Haridwar. The proposed corridor is expected to improve connectivity between Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand while making travel easier between major religious destinations.
Six-lane greenfield expressway planned
The extension will be developed as a six-lane greenfield expressway, with provisions to expand it to eight lanes in the future. The estimated project cost is ₹10,761 crore, which will be funded entirely by the Uttar Pradesh government.
Following the cabinet’s approval, the state will move ahead with key formalities, including preparation of the Detailed Project Report and planning for land acquisition.
Bijnor to get faster connectivity
The project is expected to significantly improve connectivity for Bijnor district, which currently relies largely on National Highway 34 for travel towards Haridwar.
The new expressway link could also provide faster access between Bijnor and Lucknow. Better road connectivity may support trade, business activity and investment in the districts along the route.
Faster travel between Prayagraj and Haridwar
One of the major objectives of the extension is to create a more direct, access-controlled road connection between Prayagraj and Haridwar.
Both cities are important pilgrimage centres and have hosted the Kumbh Mela. The improved road network could make long-distance travel easier for pilgrims and other travellers, particularly during major religious gatherings.
Tourism and jobs could get a boost
The proposed corridor is also expected to support religious and cultural tourism in the region. Better connectivity could benefit hotels, restaurants, transport services and other local businesses in Bijnor, Haridwar and neighbouring districts.
The project is likely to create construction-related employment in the short term, while improved connectivity could support additional economic activity along the route over time.
