Caught Without ID? Legal Immigrants Now at Risk Under Trump’s Latest Crackdown
In a significant move, the Trump administration has received court approval to mandate that all immigrants in the United States—including those on H-1B visas and green card holders—must carry their federal registration documents at all times.
The ruling came after a U.S. district judge gave the green light to enforce a decades-old immigration law. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has now been directed to ensure compliance across the board.
“All noncitizens 18 and older must carry this documentation at all times,” DHS stated. “This administration has directed DHS to prioritize enforcement—there will be no sanctuary for noncompliance.”
No Exceptions for Legal Immigrants
This new enforcement includes not just undocumented immigrants but also those with legal status—such as Indians on H-1B visas, green card holders, individuals with border crossing cards, or those with valid I-94 admission records. Failure to carry ID may lead to legal consequences, according to federal officials.
DHS Secretary Kristi Noem emphasized the administration’s firm stance:
“President Trump and I have a clear message for those in our country illegally: leave now. If you leave voluntarily, you may have the opportunity to return and pursue the American dream legally. The Trump administration will enforce all our immigration laws.”
Law Rooted in WWII-Era Legislation
The requirement for non-citizens to register with the U.S. government isn’t new. It dates back to the Alien Registration Act of 1940, passed during World War II amid concerns over foreign influence and national security. However, consistent enforcement of this law has been rare.
According to an Associated Press report, the rule has been largely dormant since the mid-1940s, except in selective instances. Immigrant advocacy groups argue that reviving this policy could lead to profiling and unnecessary fear among immigrant communities.
What Immigrants Need to Know
If you are an immigrant—whether here on a work visa, green card, or other legal status—you are now required to carry proof of registration or identification 24×7. This applies regardless of your legal standing or length of stay.
The move is part of a broader push by the Trump administration to tighten immigration control and boost homeland security surveillance.
