Mumbai: Critically acclaimed actor Pankaj Tripathi recently featured in IMDb’s exclusive segment ‘The Essential Guide’, where he opened up about lesser-known stories from his career—including how he nearly turned down Mimi, his journey through digital entertainment, and the emotional moments behind iconic roles.

He Nearly Rejected Mimi—Wife Changed His Mind

Tripathi confessed he initially declined to be part of Mimi until producers Dinesh Vijan and Laxman Utekar reached out to his wife for help. “They called my wife and asked her to convince me. I finally gave in,” he said. The film later became one of the most-watched on OTT, earning National Awards for both Tripathi and Kriti Sanon.

Criminal Justice: A Defining Role in OTT Landscape

Tripathi reprised his much-loved role as lawyer Madhav Mishra in the fourth season of Criminal Justice, streaming on OTT. Reflecting on his journey, he cited Madhav Mishra as one of the three defining characters of his digital career, alongside Guruji in Sacred Games and Kaleen Bhaiya in Mirzapur.

“While acting, I feel that I should just keep thinking and it should transform into an expression that defines the character,” Tripathi explained, emphasizing the emotional depth he brings to Madhav Mishra’s courtroom persona.

Wearing Sarees & Breaking Stereotypes in Raavan

Talking about his unconventional role in Raavan, Tripathi shared how he explored his feminine side, donning a saree and makeup while filming for seven days. “Even in my village, I once dressed up as a girl for a play. I’ve never had such a chance on screen again.”

The First Picture With His Parents

Revealing the story behind a cherished photograph, he said, “In villages, clicking pictures isn’t common. I had a mobile and asked a child nearby to take a photo with my parents. It was the first time I placed my hand on my father’s shoulder—something unheard of in my village.”

Versatility Proved With Masaan and Nil Battey Sannata

Tripathi shared how Masaan helped break the aggressive image he gained from Gangs of Wasseypur, showcasing his softer side. Then came Nil Battey Sannata, where he played a comic role—a school principal—further establishing his versatility. “Ashwiny Iyer Tiwari gave me the freedom to shape the role my way.”

Pain Behind the National Award for Newton

While shooting Newton, Tripathi endured severe back pain and wore an orthopedic belt under his uniform. Despite the discomfort, the film fetched him his first National Award. “It was emotional—I cried. I called my wife immediately. Winning a National Award was a lifelong dream.”

Emotional Resonance of Bareilly Ki Barfi

For Bareilly Ki Barfi, Tripathi had to wear a bodysuit to appear bulkier. “Many girls told me they made their dads watch it, and their bond with them improved through the film,” he shared with a smile.
