120kmph Thrills: PM Modi Opens Ganga Expressway – What It Means for You
Prime Minister Narendra Modi kicked things off today in Hardoi, Uttar Pradesh, by inaugurating the Ganga Expressway. This beast of a road clocks in at 594 km and promises to transform travel across the state. Imagine slashing a grueling 10-12 hour drive from Meerut to Prayagraj down to about 6 hours. That’s the kind of game-changer we’re talking about, all for a build cost of Rs 36,230 crore.
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath joined the event and shared on X that this six-lane highway (with room to expand to eight) acts like a lifeline for villages, farmers, business folks, and young people. It will speed up development and shrink distances in a big way.
Quick Facts on India’s Newest Greenfield Expressway
This access-controlled corridor starts in Meerut’s Bijoli village and ends in Prayagraj’s Judapur Dandu, hugging the Ganga river. Top speed? 120 kmph. The Uttar Pradesh Expressways Industrial Development Authority (UPEIDA) handled the whole thing.
Spans 12 Districts and 518 Villages
It weaves through Meerut, Bulandshahr, Hapur, Amroha, Sambhal, Badaun, Shahjahanpur, Hardoi, Unnao, Raebareli, Pratapgarh, and Prayagraj. That links western, central, and eastern UP seamlessly, putting hospitals, colleges, and markets closer for millions in those 518 villages.
Travel Wins and Pilgrimage Perks
No more all-day hauls between Meerut and Prayagraj. Officials say expect 6-8 hours tops. Plus, it smooths trips to holy spots like Prayagraj’s Sangam, Varanasi, and Ayodhya, where crowds flock by the millions each year.
Built-In Airstrip for Defense
Check this out: a 3.5 km emergency landing strip right in Shahjahanpur. Indian Air Force jets tested it successfully back in May 2025. It’s dual-purpose infrastructure that boosts security alongside everyday travel.

Economic Boost with Industrial Zones
Picture 2,635 hectares set aside for manufacturing and logistics hubs along the route. Think pharma parks in Meerut and Prayagraj, textile spots in Badaun, IT in Kanpur. It will cut logistics costs, streamline supply chains, and fire up factories statewide.
Big Help for Farmers and Rural Areas
Western UP has industry going for it, but eastern parts lean hard on farming and often get left behind. Now, farmers can truck produce to NCR markets faster, cut waste on fresh goods from Purvanchal, and pocket better prices. Tourism gets a lift too, plus jobs direct and indirect.
From Idea to Road: The Timeline
Modi laid the foundation in Shahjahanpur on December 18, 2021, with actual building starting April 2022. The concept dates back to 2007 under Mayawati, revived in 2019 by Yogi. Adani Group built three-quarters of it, tackling 464 km total.
Part of a Massive UP Expressway Web
This feeds into the state’s growing network, linking with Agra-Lucknow Expressway, Jewar Link, Farrukhabad Link, and more. Phase 2 adds 455 km to Haridwar west and Ballia via Varanasi east, hitting a full 999 km coast-to-coast.
