Ben Stokes May Quit International Cricket After London Nightclub Row

Ben Stokes is reportedly weighing up retirement from international cricket after a nightclub incident in London that has prompted an England and Wales Cricket Board investigation. The episode happened in the early hours at the Rex Rooms on King’s Road following England’s first Test win over New Zealand at Lord’s. Stokes and teammate Gus Atkinson are both under review for allegedly breaching team rules.

Reports say the altercation involved Saracens academy player Totoa Auvaa. A punch that missed its intended target struck an ECB security guard, who required stitches; Stokes and Atkinson were not injured. The incident has intensified scrutiny of Stokes’ leadership, coming after earlier player conduct issues during the Ashes that led to stricter team rules, including a midnight curfew.

Senior cricket correspondent George Dobell told talkSPORT he believes Stokes may act before the ECB reaches a conclusion. “I fear from everything I hear that Stokes is going to act first. And, regretfully, I hear that he is going to step down and possibly even retire,” Dobell said. Sources say the ECB has offered Stokes the option to continue as a Test player while resigning as captain, but the board could remove him if disciplinary action requires it.

Now 35, Stokes is reportedly considering ending a 15-year international career rather than waiting for the outcome of the probe. The investigation is ongoing, and the ECB has not yet released a public finding.
