Anurag Kashyap and Shubhra Shetty: Inside Their 11-Year Relationship and Age Gap

Filmmaker Anurag Kashyap has offered a rare, candid glimpse into his personal life, opening up about his 11-year relationship with Shubhra Shetty. The director addressed the couple’s nearly 20-year age gap, the hurdles they faced early on, and where they stand on the idea of marriage.

How Their Journey Began

The pair first crossed paths when Shubhra worked as an assistant director at Anurag’s former production banner, Phantom Films. They began dating around 2015 when Shubhra was roughly 20 years old, while Anurag was already an established name in Hindi cinema, a father, and had been married twice before.

Naturally, the beginning was not entirely smooth. Shubhra shared that her parents initially had reservations about the match due to the age difference and his past, but they eventually trusted her judgment and supported her choice. To avoid unnecessary media scrutiny, the two kept their romance quiet in the early years, attending events together without drawing headlines.

Addressing the 20-Year Age Gap

Over time, the age difference began to weigh on Anurag. He admitted to feeling self-conscious about it, to the point where he initially tried to pull away. He did not want his presence to limit her youth, so he actively encouraged Shubhra to explore the world on her own before committing long-term.

Shubhra noted that Anurag wanted her to experience life independently, believing that if their bond was genuine, she would naturally find her way back. That time apart only solidified their connection, anchored by mutual passions for cinema, literature, and film festivals.

Is Marriage on the Cards?

Having previously been married to film editor Aarti Bajaj and actor Kalki Koechlin, Anurag feels traditional labels matter less than genuine companionship. He explained that a formal wedding is not a priority for Shubhra either.

For the director, maintaining the peace, trust, and connection they share is what counts. Today, the couple lives together in Bengaluru, choosing a quiet, grounded routine away from Mumbai’s constant industry spotlight.
