Ritwik Ghatak’s 100th Birth Anniversary: Westland Books Releases ‘Unmechanical’ Tribute
Westland Books has released Unmechanical: Ritwik Ghatak in 50 Fragments to mark the centenary of legendary filmmaker Ritwik Ghatak (1925–1976), whose influence continues to shape Indian cinema. Published on October 20, 2025, ahead of his 100th birth anniversary on November 4, the anthology features fifty essays by filmmakers, collaborators, scholars and family members.
Edited by Shamya Dasgupta, Unmechanical revisits Ghatak’s creative journey and the emotional depth of his films. Contributors trace his personal, political, and artistic sides, exploring themes of partition, displacement, rebellion and belonging. The book offers both a tribute and a fresh lens through which to view an artist who redefined cinematic realism and myth.

Speaking about the release, editor Shamya Dasgupta said the collection stands as a vital effort to understand one of India’s most complex artistic legacies. Westland Publisher Karthika V.K. hailed it as an extraordinary blend of personal narrative, documentation, and analysis.
Unmechanical: Ritwik Ghatak in 50 Fragments is available in leading bookstores and online platforms across India.
