India Performs World's First 10,000 Km Robotic Surgery Using Homegrown SSI Mantra System

New Delhi: In a groundbreaking medical feat, India has pulled off the world’s first intercontinental robotic telesurgery, linking surgeons across 10,000 km from France to Indore. The procedure was made possible by SSI Mantra, India’s first CDSCO-approved surgical robotic system built for remote surgeries.

The milestone took place at the Society of Robotic Surgery (SRS) Conference in Strasbourg, France. Two complex surgeries—a gastric bypass and a robotic atrial septal defect (ASD) closure—were performed remotely from the IRCAD headquarters in France to Sri Aurobindo Institute of Medical Sciences (SAIMS) and IRCAD National Centre in Indore, India.

The gastric bypass was performed by Dr. Mohit Bhandari, President of IRCAD India, in just over 44 minutes without complications. The ASD closure was carried out by Dr. Sudhir Srivastava, Founder and CEO of SS Innovations International, and was broadcast live. The surgeries demonstrated zero latency, surgical precision, and seamless control—marking a major step in the future of cross-border healthcare.

Supporting the cardiac procedure in Indore were Dr. Lalit Malik (Manipal Hospital, Jaipur), Dr. Ram Krishna Shukla, and Dr. Bipin Arya from SAIMS, along with SSII teams. Both procedures were executed flawlessly, showing that distance no longer limits life-saving surgical care.

Dr. Srivastava credited the achievement to collaboration across teams and highlighted the potential of the SSI Mantra system to transform access to cardiac and complex surgeries, especially in underserved regions.

Dr. Bhandari added, “This is more than a tech breakthrough. It’s a game-changer for accessible and safe surgery, driven by Indian innovation.”

So far, over 5,000 surgeries across specialties—including 35 telesurgeries and 10 cardiac operations—have been done with the SSI Mantra, without a single device-related complication.

SS Innovations remains the only surgical robotics company with CDSCO approval for both telesurgery and tele-proctoring in India, pushing the frontiers of medicine one breakthrough at a time.
