EV Revolution Coming Soon: Nitin Gadkari Says Electric Car Prices to Match Petrol Vehicles in 6 Months

Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari announced that electric vehicle (EV) prices in India will soon align with petrol vehicle costs within the next four to six months. Speaking at the 20th FICCI Higher Education Summit 2025, Gadkari highlighted that reducing dependence on fossil fuel imports—currently costing India around Rs 22 lakh crore annually—is vital for sustainable growth.

“In the next 4-6 months, EV prices will be equivalent to petrol vehicles,” Gadkari said, emphasizing that clean energy adoption is not only an environmental need but an economic imperative.

He also shared an ambitious outlook for India’s automobile industry, revealing plans to make it the world’s largest within five years. “When I assumed office, the industry’s size was Rs 14 lakh crore. Today, it stands at Rs 22 lakh crore,” he stated.

Currently, the U.S. automobile sector leads at Rs 78 lakh crore, followed by China at Rs 47 lakh crore, with India third at Rs 22 lakh crore. Gadkari added that farmers have earned an extra Rs 45,000 crore by producing ethanol from corn, showcasing the growing importance of green fuel initiatives in India’s economy.
