Apple is gearing up for its highly anticipated iPhone 17 launch event on September 9, and one major change could be on the horizon: the removal of the physical SIM card tray from most new models. According to multiple leaks and industry reports, Apple plans to roll out eSIM-only iPhones in the European Union, affecting 27 countries including Germany, France and Spain. Retailers across the EU are reportedly undergoing mandatory eSIM training, and the company’s global training efforts hint the change might extend beyond Europe.

In India, where eSIM support already exists, Apple has up to now offered both eSIM and physical SIM slot options. However, sources suggest that at least one upcoming model—the ultra-thin iPhone 17 Air—is expected to ditch the SIM card tray entirely, possibly setting a new precedent for Indian buyers. Leaks indicate that while some regions like China might still get iPhones with a SIM slot, India could see a mix: eSIM-only iPhone 17 Air, and other models with at least one SIM tray to support existing users.

Apple promotes eSIMs as more secure and convenient, making SIM card swaps digital and enabling instant deactivation if the phone is stolen. Still, transferring an eSIM is not as simple as popping in a physical card, which could be a sticking point for some consumers.

With official details expected at the launch, Indian buyers should watch for model-specific announcements to know whether the SIM card tray era is really over—or if they’ll get another year of choice.
