The real reason Rishabh Pant quit as LSG captain after a brutal IPL season

Rishabh Pant is officially stepping down as the captain of the Lucknow Super Giants. The franchise confirmed the news on Friday, following a tough IPL campaign that saw the team finish at the bottom of the table with just four wins.

While the team’s performance certainly put pressure on his leadership, insiders suggest the decision wasn’t just about the points table. Pant reportedly felt restricted by the heavy management structure behind the scenes. He even dropped a few hints in his post-match interviews toward the end of the season, mentioning that having too many voices involved in tactical decisions made it difficult for him to captain on instinct.

This move wasn’t a sudden knee-jerk reaction either. Pant had actually approached the management during the second half of the tournament to express his desire to give up the captaincy. While the team asked him to reconsider at the time, they have now accepted his request.

The captaincy pressure also seemed to impact his performance at the crease. After LSG broke the bank with a massive 27 crore bid to sign him during the mega auction, Pant had two of his quietest scoring seasons, finishing this year’s tournament with 312 runs.

LSG is now forced into a rebuilding phase. The management has thanked Pant for his time as leader, and the hunt for a replacement is already underway. Names like Nicholas Pooran, Mitchell Marsh, and Aiden Markram are currently at the top of the list to take over the reins.
