What is Cinco De Mayo?
For many across the world, Cinco de Mayo means enjoying great Mexican food ,bbq’s with loads of tequila, mezcal, cerveza (beer) and colourful margaritas on beautifully hot and sunny afternoon. But Cinco de Mayo, which means May 5 in Spanish, is probably one of the most misunderstood Mexican holidays.
Contrary to popular belief, Cinco de Mayo is an annual celebration that commemorates the Mexican army’s unlikely victory over the French forces of Napoleon III on May 5, 1862, at the Battle of Puebla, under the leadership of General Ignacio Zaragoza.
In the United States, however, Cinco de Mayo has taken on significance beyond that in Mexico. In the U.S. the date has become associated with the celebration of Mexican-American culture. In Mexico, the commemoration of the battle continues to be mostly ceremonial, such as through military parades.
You’re trying to be culturally appropriate while hosting a holiday whose very existence is dubiously culturally appropriate. Cinco de Mayo may have very little to do with Mexican culture as it is primarily celebrated in the U.S. by English speaking non-Mexicans – You’re essentially throwing an American holiday party, not a Mexican one. Which, well, is very Mexican. CINCO DE MAYO PARTIES ARE FUN!
